Of all the waste that we create, e-waste – the mass of electrical and electronics equipment that is discarded – represents one of the most significant global ecological challenges and also offers one of the greatest commercial opportunities.
An estimated 50 million tonnes of e-waste are produced each year globally. 70% of heavy metals in landfills originates from discarded electronics. Only about 15-20% of e-waste is recycled. The remainder ends up in landfills and urban incinerators.
Almost 50 million tonnes of e-waste was generated in 2012, representing about 7 kg for every person on the planet. The volume of e-waste will continue to increase each year, and is expected to reach between 64 million tonnes (Source: UN STEP initiative and 93 million tonnes (Source: Global E-waste Management Market) by next year.
Supported by UN-generated empirical data, Electronic Waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams in developed as well as in developing countries
As our infatuation with our phones, computers and televisions continues to grow, so too does the importance of properly recycling them. By choosing to throw your old electronic devices in the trash, you are sending them to sit in a landfill or to be incinerated, both of which can cause major environmental damage.
